Affidavit of Connie Brauer

On Aug.2/07, my husband, Victor Harris and I arrived at 6048 Pepperell St. in Halifax, the home of Paulette Harris.

It was a beautiful sunny day and we had packed a picnic lunch in the car. We were hoping to catch up with William Harris, DOB 12/10/1986 and Emily Harris, DOB 08/02/1979 and spend a little time with them. We didn’t know if Emily was home but thought it might be possible.

We had been trying to find out what William was doing for months. He didn’t return phone calls.
His Dad had left numerous messages and we had sent a monthly progress report questionnaire each month. Paulette Harris was ordered by the court to keep us updated, but she never did.

William lives with his mother, Paulette Harris, but it is quite possible that he has moved out.
Victor is still paying child support for this adult man and we know nothing about what he is doing.

Victor rang the bell and Emily came out. Victor wished her a Happy Birthday. The two of them were talking while I waited in the car.

Emily stated that William was not there, that he had been sober for a couple of weeks and that he was drinking again. This was bad news.

I also had an errand and that was to serve Paulette Harris some legal papers. I have been serving her for years and she is always abusive, uncooperative and avoids service whenever she can. We have hired process servers in the past but the bill is very high, because Paulette avoids service and they have to go back time and again. No one will work for us anymore, because she is so abusive. Hiring out is not an option. When I serve her, I am taking on the role of process server. I deserve courtesy and respect.

It was imperative that I serve her while we were there.

We live in Falmouth, NS and it is a long way. We are not making a second trip.

I greeted Emily and asked her to call her mother outside so that I could serve her.

She refused and immediately became verbally abusive. She blamed me for ruining her life.

I was quite shocked but did not respond. I knocked on the door and Paulette came out like a crazy woman. Verbally abusive, screaming and yelling.

I noticed a little table right inside her door and placed the documents on it.

She grabbed the envelope and raced down the stairs towards our car.

I followed her. She tried to yank open the car door but it was locked. All the while both Emily and Paulette were screaming at us.

Then Paulette hit my face with the full force of her hand. My cheek started to swell, my eye hurt and I was in shock. I still didn’t respond. It is my policy not to speak with her. I proceeded to our car, Vic got in too, and I dialed 911.

During this time Paulette and Emily were screaming at us. Emily grabbed the registered court documents, ripped them up and threw them at us.

I turned on the ignition and slowing pulled away. We parked at the Holiday Inn, a few meters away, all the while speaking with 911.

I asked for immediate help. They came quickly. Three vehicles and many officers.

Several officers took turns asking me what happened and I told them.

They suggested I file a complaint at the court house on Spring Garden Rd.

I asked them to return the documents to Paulette Harris, as she was already served.

I would follow up by sending a copy in the mail.

Neither Victor nor I , responded in any way to their verbal and physical abuse.

On the way home, my jaw ached, my face hurt and I got a serious headache.
